here is something you never knew about Mangosteen
If you haven't tasted Mangosteen yet, you've missed out on one of the most exotic, tropical fruits from South of Asia.
At HB we have been getting wonderful batches of Mangosteen from an organic farm in Kerala currently
Mangosteen is a purple rind fruit with delicate and juicy white inner flesh. It has a sweet-sour flavour, some even describe it as a delicious mix between peach, lychee, strawberry and pineapple. Now, who wouldn't love that.
Mango might be the king of fruits, but Mangosteen is popular as the queen of fruits.
We love eating them as is. You need to make a cut around the fruits circumference, about 1/4 way in (till you reach the white flesh). Then, similar to an Avocado separate the two halves of the rind to reveal the juicy white segments which are edible.
Before you open out the fruit, here is an interesting fact about Mangosteen you probably never knew
Have you ever turned around and look at the bottom of the shell? Did you happen to notice a flower shaped stamp there ?
It adds an aesthetic touch but actually provides and interesting insight into what is contained within the fruit. At opposite end of the stem, you will find these embossed florets on the outer shell. They are the flat remnants of the stigma arranged in a rosette on the apex.
Interestingly the number of these petals / stigma lobes are indicative of the number of fleshy segments inside the fruit which range anywhere between 4 and 8
That's right, this means you would be able to guess the number of segments contained inside, without even cutting open the fruit!! Check this out next time.
Oh well, no one can be cooler and more creative than mother nature from whom we all draw inspiration.
