Kalipath Sapota season is in full swing at our favourite farm at Hampi. This harvest has been wonderful in texture & very sweet.

In a conversation with our farmer Seshu, he was detailing the ways he manages to achieve the best sapota harvest.

Letting you all into a gist of our conversation:

What all do you use to ensure it is grown organic ?

" We use Jeevamrutha - a cow based microbial culture spray applied to soil every 15 days.

Mulching is done to develop rich organic matter in soil, keeping it healthy.

Exclusively natural kashayas like AgniAstra made using Chilli, Neem and Garlic are used for repelling pests.

How do you ensure fruit has a sweet taste when it reaches the consumer ?

" We closely check and handpick each fruit even if its on the top of the tree (30 ft tall) by climbing to the top and collecting them in a shoulder bag."

At times, one face ripening issues in Sapota, What about these ones ?

"We pick the fruits at just the right time, ensuring there will be no ripening issues.

Before packing, we double inspect each and every fruit carefully for it's proper maturity and other issues.

These practices help bring out that superb pulpy texture, aroma, and honey like taste. "

How are these Sapotas Harvested compared to regular commercial sapotas?

Regarding Sapotas Selective Harvesting: We have 25 - 30 feet height trees and we climb around 20 to 30 times each tree in a season. We search for matured fruit each time we climb and then harvest. This is lot of effort to ensure best quality/sweet of fruits in every delivery. None of the conventional farmers do it

They climb max 2-3 times in season and harvest only based on size rather than maturity check. Hence the fruits need artificial ripener and are tasteless

Check out this video from his farm where we show how we handle the sapotas organically at the farm.
