Two tables, one poster…and what Healthy Buddha became
Thank you for being part of the Healthy Buddha community.
You may know us for our authentic organic fruits, vegetables and groceries.
But we are not simply a vegetable store that delivers.
We started Healthy Buddha to solve the trust deficit in organic food.
Even after 12 years, we are still learning about farming, changing seasons and how to deliver fresh produce with as few issues as possible.
We may occasionally make mistakes, but we will never take the trust of our customers for granted.
There is a larger story behind the food that reaches your home.
Here are 10 things you may not know about Healthy Buddha:
1. We started with two tables and a poster
Healthy Buddha began in 2014 with two tables, a poster and a mission to make trustworthy organic food more accessible.
In fact, I started Healthy Buddha while I was still working at Capgemini. I worked on it during the weekends, and in the early days, we fulfilled orders from my apartment in Whitefield.
2. We are a small, Bangalore-based company
Today, we are a team of over 50 people, and our warehouse is based in Sarjapur.
We prefer to remain focused on building a business that makes a meaningful difference to our customers, farmers, employees and other small businesses.
3. We have no outside investors
Healthy Buddha has grown organically, largely through word of mouth and the support of loyal customers.
This allows us to remain answerable to our customers and never take your trust for granted.
4. Your order supports several small businesses
We consciously prefer working with small farmers, producers and local businesses. Bakery, Mushroom, Micro Greens, Paneer, Tofu, Ghee, Pickles, Traditional Snacks, and many more such value added products.
When you buy from Healthy Buddha, your order supports an entire ecosystem of independent people and families.
5. We work directly with organic farmers
Over the years, we have developed a strong network of passionate organic farmers.
Some have worked with us for many years, helping us understand exactly where and how your food is grown.
6. We do not sell everything simply because it carries an “organic” label
Every product is carefully evaluated before it reaches our customers. One of our simplest rules is: “Would we use this for our own family?”
In fact, many of the products we add to Healthy Buddha are products that I personally use at home.
We also do not expect organic produce to look perfect. Natural differences in size, shape and colour are normal. We focus more on how the food was grown, its freshness and its taste than on cosmetic perfection.
7. We harvest based on your orders
We do not keep vegetables and greens in storage for several days. Much of the produce is harvested against confirmed orders so that it reaches you as fresh as possible.
Occasionally, an item you ordered may not be delivered if the farmer finds that its quality is not good enough during harvest.
While this can be disappointing, we would rather not send something that fails our quality standards.
Certain Fruits and essentials such as onions, potatoes, garlic and ginger are kept in stock, but they are checked for quality before being sent to you.
8. We have built our own delivery team
Most of the people who deliver your orders own their vehicles and work closely with Healthy Buddha. They are genuine and dependable people, and many have been part of our delivery team for several years.
Some joined us as young delivery boys and have since started families and gone on to own their trucks or autos.
You may recognise many of them because the same familiar faces have been delivering to your home for a long time. They are an important part of the Healthy Buddha community.
9. We randomly lab-test selected produce
Along with being certified organic, we randomly test selected products at NABL-accredited laboratories for pesticide residues and, where relevant, heavy metals.
We also publish the reports on our website because we believe trust should be supported by transparency.
10. We make sure surplus produce is put to good use
We do not carry forward old vegetables and send them with future orders.
Surplus produce that is still suitable for consumption is donated, while vegetables that cannot be used are given to cows at a local goshala.
This helps us reduce food waste while ensuring that our customers receive fresh produce.
If you have been ordering from us for some time, I would love to hear from you:
What is the one thing you value most about Healthy Buddha?
Warmly,
Gautham PB
